As part of their obligatory work placement, Cologne teacher students teach children and adolescents who live in refugee shelters in the German language and, in some cases, in alphabetisation. The refugees are supported in small, and if possible age-homogeneous groups. The aim is to support their transition into the regular school system. Due to an increasing need for support at schools in promoting newly immigrated pupils, PROMPT! was extended to schools in 2017. As part of their vocational field internship, student teachers support teachers in preparation/international support classes. The pupils are also supported in acquiring the German language as well as the linguistic requirements in different subjects.
