Teaching methods for the classroom
International Workshops
In a constantly as well as rapidly changing world, the demands placed on teachers are immense. One task of the university is to prepare future teachers for a world of tomorrow, in which they can then fully and globally educate and prepare their pupils.
Within our UNITE-project we offer international workshops to equip our students for the globalised and internationalised world. By raising their international awareness and orientation, we intend to prepare our students for their teaching profession.

Are you a teacher or planning to become a teacher, asking yourself how to deal with diversity in class whilst embracing and honouring the diversity of your student group? If so, this workshop is just the right thing for you to participate in! In this two-part online workshop you will dive into concepts and methods from social and cultural anthropology, which will empower you to thematize diversity with your students based on an equal footing. In the course of this dynamic workshop, you will be exploring a range of methods with your workshop fellows. Through self-reflexive excercises and group work, you will be enabled to adapt these methods to your own teaching routine – no matter which subjects you are actually teaching. In addition to this methodological toolbox, you will discover where and how to find teaching resources for your lesson planning, with a special focus on what social and cultural anthropology has to offer in this context. Furthermore, this workshop is designed as a safe space to share experiences and challenges in dealing with diversity and cultural differences in class. You are warmly invited to make new connections with your workshop fellows and create a vibrant network of teachers from different regions and schooling contexts.
Please note: since the methods and resources we are about to explore and discuss require certain abilities of self-reflection and change of perspective, they are appropriate for working with students at age 13 and older. Please make sure you have the following working materials ready for our sessions: blank paper, drawing materials (e.g. felt pens, coloured pencils), matches.

The subject of gender seems omnipresent : It fills the news, public debates, political discussions and mainstream media. In the educational contexts it has always been prevalent : Whether schools are gender-mixed or separated, whether girls and boys have the same opportunities and access to education, whether different disciplines record a higher ratio of a certain gender. But what exactly does gender refer to and what is the difference between sex and gender ? Which spheres of our lives are affected by gender roles and how do these play out in the educational context ? These and other questions will be raised in our workshop « Gendersensitive Approaches in Education ». We will discuss how gender roles are negotiated in classroom contexts, how representations in educational material affect students’ gender identities and how respective expectations impact grading for instance. Referring to self-reflexive approaches and scientific input, we will shed light on the various facets of the phenomenon and its effects in the educational context.
The english workshop aims to transfer basic knowledge surrounding gender and strengthen the skills to identify and counter gender-based discrimination in educational contexts as well as raise awareness for different dimensions of social inequality and how they are intertwined. Max. 20 participants.

To counter structural exclusion, prejudices and other forms of discrimination, a diversity-reflective approach to pedagogy and education can foster a process of positive change. The workshop dives into embracing uncomfortable conversations and raises awareness about mechanisms of discrimination in the classroom based on stereotypes and prejudices. The interactive online format aims to foster a constructive dialogue about discrimination, micro-aggressions and self-awareness. Together we want to develop strategies to promote constructive dialogue about these issues and to find tools for confronting critical issues to eventually initiate a process of change.
